Moore at retreat for Spirituality Section of ACR

The Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) Spirituality Section announces its 7th annual retreat from Friday 1 February to Sunday 3 February 2013 to be held at the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma, California. Thomas Moore is the keynote workshop leader for this weekend.

According to the announcement, "This year’s retreat theme is all about the Care of YOUR Soul ... making sure you have all the inner resources you need to continue to make a difference in the work you do and the life you live! ... The ACRSS retreat is designed to support all practitioners who have a spiritual practice (or who are feeling disconnected from that Universal Energy and want to reconnect). Join us as we walk together on our journeys toward personal, psychological and spiritual growth."

It will also find insight in the mythology of the Graces and will consider the importance of a graceful existence. These issues may seem light and superficial. They are not. Lecture and workshop in Sarasota this weekend

Today Susan Rife writes "Care of the Soul author to lecture, lead workshop at Sarasota Memorial Hospital" for the Herald-Tribune, Sarasota. Rife's sidebar states, "Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul in Medicine, will give a lecture at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 and a workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 21 in Waldemere Auditorium at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Tickets are $25 members, $30 nonmembers for the lecture, $85 and $95 for the workshop. Register at www.cgjungsarasota.org. Sponsored by the C.G. Jung Society of Sarasota."

In this piece Rife writes, "Soon after Care of the Soul was published, 'People began calling me and writing to me and asking me to come and speak to doctors and nurses and specialists,” said Moore, a psychotherapist and former monk who has written numerous books on spirituality. "The first thing I discovered is a lot of people working in hospitals are confused about how to deal with death, with patients who are dying, and the families of the patients.'" Rife describes recommendations for medical patients in Moore's work.

Wisdom House hosts 2012 program with Moore

Thomas Moore offers the weekend retreat Soul and Spirit: Developing a Spiritual Life, from Friday 9 November to Sunday 11 November, 2012 at Wisdom House Retreat and Conference Center, in the historic town of Litchfield, Connecticut . "This property, originally known as Spruce Brook Farm, was purchased in 1949 by the Daughters of Wisdom from the family of Margaret and Frederick Busk. The Busk family estate became a convent and novitiate for the Daughters of Wisdom, and was named Mary Immaculate Novitiate. In 1960, the center also housed Seat of Wisdom College and in 1967, the center began its transition into an interfaith retreat center with the presence of a Buddhist retreat.

Wisdom House has several buildings on its campus, the oldest, with fireplace dates back to 1770. The barn, built circa 1925, is now a meeting room. The colonial brick building, an outdoor swimming pool, 50 acres of meadows and forests, all comprise the campus of Wisdom House."

Thomas Moore talks about Artemis and privacy

On 21 March 2011 Thomas Moore gave a public presentation, Artemis And Her Children: The Soul's Need For Privacy, with Re-Vision: Centre of Integrative Psychosynthesis for which he's a patron. Before his talk, Moore spoke with Sarah Van Gogh, a tutor with the Re-Vision counselling diploma course. The site offers a seven-page transcript of "Interview with Thomas Moore". In this interview Moore talks about privacy in general life and within the therapeutic relationship. To Van Gogh's question about Moore's own need for privacy, he responds:

"Well, I'm a very, very private person. There's nothing better for me than sitting at home, writing. As a matter of fact, I was just sitting by myself in the hotel room this morning, and I was thinking how much I miss writing. I've been away from home for over a week now. That's the most difficult thing about being away for me, because I enjoy writing so much. And the act of writing is very private, very personal; ultimately it does connect me to the world, but it's a very private process. I think the practice of therapy is also private, even though there are two people involved, it's still contemplative and private, I think the spirit of Artemis can be present in therapy."

Moore also talks about responses from medical audiences to his book Care of the Soul in Medicine:

"Everyone needs an opportunity to reflect on their own experience. If not, you are simply always doing, and there's no possibility for learning. I've been talking a great deal recently to people in the medical professions for my book (Care of the Soul in Medicine), and over the years I've been teaching psychiatrists, and all these people are those who really need the opportunity to reflect on what they are doing, and they have no opportunity, in their work, to do so. They're always being called on to do something. And when I suggest that this is what they need, their immediate reaction is – they can't, because they're too busy. So sometimes we can't even imagine reflection as being important enough to be put into a schedule."

Moore talks about the need for psychotherapists to speak publically in roles of leadership:

"But I think it's important to really take on some roles that come to us. Especially leadership roles. And I think therapists could be more up for that – more up for making connections to the wider world. Because they spend so much time learning a great deal about what goes on in life, in their training and in their work. And that's exactly the perspective that the world needs. But it's not happening enough. I think therapists could be a more productive force, and take more of a leadership role in the world. So, I feel the same about myself: if others are interested in having me around to do things with them, to teach or facilitate, I feel like it's my job to enter that role, and do it, without any false modesty; just really take it on!

He includes discussion of shadow aspects when listeners may be disappointed with his personal approach.

Bruce and Maryanne Curtis interview Thomas Moore today on the Progressive Radio Network's Truth and Freedom program, titled “The Life of the Soul: Engaging the Multi-Dimensional Nature of Our True Self in All Facets of Life.” In the first half of the program, Moore talks about soul in medicine, the significance of depth and emptiness, and the values of art and dreams. Moore on education: Demolish and reconstruct

Erica Sosna, founder and director of The Life Project CIC spoke with Thomas Moore during his recent trip to London about priorities in education. This five-minute video, The Soul of Education, features Moore talking about the language we use, the subjects we offer, and the people responsible for teaching. In his vision, the arts would play a primary role in curricula as they, according to Moore, humanize us and help us to see our souls. Science and mathematics would be included but not at the top of the list. He says, as a psychotherapist, he sees a direct line between naive notions of spirituality and sexual issues ― the primary matter in emotional problems. Therefore he would promote religion, not as a belief system but as an exploration of meaning and spiritual vision. Moore also suggests teachers need to develop into bigger, deeper, richer, and more visionary people.
