Attend a week-long course with Moore in 2012

The New England Educational Institute posts the symposia schedule for its 2012 summer program on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Thomas Moore presents Spirituality and Care of the Soul in Psychotherapy from Monday 9 July to Friday 13 July 2012 at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel in Eastham. Register online before 13 March 2012 for the early price $539 US.

According to NEEI, "In this symposium, Dr. Moore will offer a way to practice therapy with a rich and positive philosophy of life while including paradoxes and challenges. Participants will explore the fundamentals of archetypal psychology and how it offers deep insight into healing. Participants will view filmed interviews of healers in order to obtain a complete picture of the qualities needed to be a healer. The “shadow” side of being a counselor or medical professional — problems of eros, power, money, belief, insecurity, and burn-out — will also be addressed."

Moore also offers this program on Marco Island, Florida from Monday 20 February to Friday 24 February, 2012. Register online before 1 December 2011 for the early price $499 US.

Psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, primary care physicians, counselors, nurses and allied mental health professionals are the intended audience, however symposia are open to anyone interested in the topic.

Moore is 2011 Bob Russum Memorial Lecturer

Joseph Cole writes about Thomas Moore's upcoming lecture under the headline "Greenwich Lecturer Focuses on Body, Mind and Soul" for The Daily Easton. Moore is this year's featured speaker at the annual Bob Rossum Memorial Lecture to take place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., 16 November 2011 at the Greenwich Library, Cole Auditorium, in Greenwich, Connecticut. Cole writes:
Moore will "discuss his holistic approach to health care, which he knows isn't the easiest for some to grasp. Modern medicine focuses largely on fixing the immediate problem. He wants to fix the whole being and believes that means addressing the emotional and spiritual elements as part of the recovery process.

To that end, Moore doesn't eschew the technology and methodology of medicine. He has had two shunts placed in his heart. He makes no qualms that without the physical end of the health-care spectrum, he wouldn't be here today to talk about the emotional and spiritual parts."
This lecture is free, however limited space requires pre-registration. To reserve your seat call 203-863-3627 or 888-357-2409, or register online at www.greenwichhospital.org.

BetterListen.com offers free Moore download

BetterListen.com makes available Thomas Moore’s audio program A Magical Life as a free digital download until Wednesday 9 November 2011. This program (ISBN: 978-1-61544-006-1) regularly costs $9.95. It has a run time of 137 minutes.

According to the site description, "... Thomas Moore recommends a radical shift in priorities: slowing down, living with our human imperfections and designing an intimate life. Moore illuminates this important lesson in this recording by focusing on old-time magicians – masters of illusion who created experiences of wonder by tapping into the less obvious, less mechanical, and less literal potencies of nature. Moore talks about how, through magic, we bring the heart into play and become more able to regard the most ordinary aspects of daily life as sacred."

Download the program now before the offer expires Wednesday. This offer is part of a tribute to James Hillman who died 27 October 2011. Read BetterListen.com's blog entry about this tribute.

Restraint accompanies sex, beauty and grace

Today Thomas Moore posts "Dallas and the Soul" on his blog. This piece celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Dallas Insitute of Humanities and Culture, as a precursor to Moore’s appearance on 10 November 2011 to talk about his work and the theme of beauty. He shares:
"In Dallas I also hope to talk once again about Botticelli’s allegorical and beautiful painting la Primavera. I want to focus on the role of one of the Graces, Castitas, chastity, known by the Greeks as Aidos, Restraint. We don’t often think of restraint as part of the world of sex, beauty, sensuality and grace, but this painting makes it the turning-point in Venus’s universe. In the painting Restraint allows an opening to Hermes, the imagination of the world and insight into life. He points to clouds with his traditional magic wand, suggesting that we see images in an otherwise only practical and literal world. We need to pause and appreciate the beauty and significance of all that we behold with our senses."

Remembering James Hillman across the web

13 May 2018
The James Hillman Symposium this year is Friday 26 - Saturday 27 October at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture in Dallas, Texas. The theme is "Animal Presences":
“By bringing our superior postures to the level of the creature . . ., we begin to see as they do; a transposed eye. . . . To see with the creaturely eye is an act of imagining the world so that it appears in continuing animation, in a continuing play of creation with which human consciousness participates by means of imagining acts. Not the creative imagination as some wondrous gift that creates images, art, and ideas. Rather, the transposed eye itself releases what is into its own createdness, each event as as a presentation of creativity.” James Hillman, Animal Presences

Pacifica Graduate Institute hosts Climates of Change and the Therapy of Ideas conference from Thursday 21 April to Sunday 24 April, 2016.

"In this calling, we are deeply inspired by James Hillman, the founder of Archetypal Psychology, toward creating a future that undertakes a critical “re-visioning” and “re-imagining” of our world. He urged us to create a therapy of ideas, “to bring in new ideas so that we can see the same old patterns differently.”

The James Hillman Symposium for October 16-17, 2015 at the Dallas Institute will address Senex and Puer.

"The 2015 James Hillman Symposium will address Hillman’s third volume, Senex and Puer. Senex and Puer are Latin terms for “old man” and “youth” and personify oppositional states such as old versus new, authority versus creativity, and control versus impulse. Speakers will discuss these primary patterns for how we perceive ourselves and others. Join us for a lively conversation of Hillman’s work in a series of talks and roundtable discussions."

"Teachers We Trust" from Thomas Moore
James Hillman
"Psychologist James Hillman died in October. He is the most insightful person I’ve ever encountered, in life or in print. I put him above Plato and Aristotle. Here’s one lesson I took from him: He never turned off the switch of his genius. He was always on. Even on his deathbed, he was the thinker and the teacher. Today, people often criticize thinking as an evasion of emotion. Not so with James. He was a passionate and emotional man. If you really want to be taught, challenged as well as inspired, read anything by James Hillman. If you take it in, your life will never be the same.

Pantheatre Presents James Hillman-Tribute Workshop
IMPACTS April 26 - May 3 2013
"James Hillman's IMPACT on Pantheatre is mainly in the construction and figuring out of performance narrative, in what he called: making "image-sense". It applies especially to the setting-up of texts in performance. Hillman was a master at narrative mobility, which is the most important aspect of our training: how to make a move. There is a lot of talk today of "non-narrative" theatre. Hillman makes us end up in something like "non-narrative narrative theatre". (Enrique Pardo).

Summary: "James Hillman is remembered as the author of papers and books, including Senex and Puer: An Aspect of the Historical Present, The Feeling Function, and A Terrible Love of War, that both explicate and deconstruct the premises of depth psychology in general and Jungian analytical psychology in particular. Although Hillman helped to found the school of Archetypal Psychology, the author of this memorial, who knew him personally, does not find him to be doctrinaire; rather he challenged even his followers, in raising his individual voice to assert the duty of psychological citizenship to pursue fresh understandings. The author argues that although Hillman's eventual subject was the soul of the world, the way he addressed it was quintessentially American."

Workshop presents ordinary natural mysticism

Alternatives at St. James’s Church, Piccadilly, London, U.K. hosts Thomas Moore’s workshop The Natural Mystic: Developing a Spirituality of Everyday Life on Sunday 22 April 2012 from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. The description for this event includes Moore’s view:
"In history we have many examples of special men and women who embody this ordinary or natural mysticism: William Morris, William Wordsworth, Henry David Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, and Glenn Gould are a few of my favorites.

The natural mystic loves this life, this world, and his or her bodily and sensual experiences. There is no tendency to avoid life or to be excessively pure and bodiless. At the same time, he or she is not unconsciously absorbed by the world but has various methods of retreat, resistance, and expression. Thoreau built a cabin by a lake and withdrew for two years of retreat. Dickinson stayed at home. Gould was eccentric and re-created music according to his genius. Morris made beautiful objects. Wordsworth understood the spirituality of nature."
Reserve your place online by scrolling down this linked page.
Cost: £65 (£40 concs.) This workshop requires pre-registration.
