Moore will give memorial lecture at St. Francis

Kate Kuhn Woodbury Memorial Lecture 2008
Thursday, May 8, 2008
5:00 p.m. Reception
6:00 p.m. Lecture
Chawla Auditorium, Saint Francis Hospital
Hartford, Connecticut

Thomas Moore, PhD (not MD) is the guest speaker at this year’s Kate Kuhn Woodbury Memorial Lecture. A description for Moore’s presentation, "Simple Pleasures: Enjoying the Life that is Given to You," says:
"The spiritual part of us has grand visions, wants to accomplish great things, and would like to know everything. The deep soul thrives more on everyday experiences of joy and pleasure. Many of us have been taught not to appreciate this. In fact, some seek out pain as noble and meritorious. But if you don’t cultivate joy, you risk becoming depressed and angry. You lose your direction and sense of self. This is important for grounding our lives and allowing for creative work and solid, long standing relationships."
Kate Kuhn Woodbury, M.D., an anesthesiologist at Saint Francis, died in 1996 at the age of 35 from ovarian cancer. Kate’s father passed away in 2005, also from cancer. This year’s beneficiary of the lecture is Clinical Cancer Research.

Online registration is be available soon. Please contact the Saint Francis Foundation by telephoning 860 714-4900 or by emailing foundation@stfranciscare.org

Power of Forgiveness to air on public television

Earlier this week in Washington D.C., Thomas Moore spoke about the power of forgiveness, as a panel member, with filmmaker Martin Doblmeier and author Kenneth Briggs, whose projects about forgiveness include Moore’s participation. This month, the Fetzer Institute, a nonprofit foundation in Kalamazoo, Michigan, sponsors release of The Power of Forgiveness on public television, as a feature of its Campaign for Love & Forgiveness.
"The word 'forgiveness' may be the most provocative word in our culture today," says Doblmeier. "There is an underlying anger in our country that we see regularly in our movies, in the news, even on our highways. For some that anger is acceptable. Others are calling for a new direction in our thinking and the way we interact with others. Forgiveness offers a solid first step."

"Taking its theme and key resources from the film, Briggs' book points in a direction of its own: probing religious meanings of the process of forgiveness, including the pacifist option; testing the complexities and limits of forgiving; considering the difficulties of actually carrying it out; and examining the scientific claims about the health benefits of forgiveness."
The notice, about the Campaign for Love & Forgiveness's sponsorship, says the web site offers downloadable discussion guides for the film, information on the outreach efforts of the seven public television stations and their community partners, suggested daily practices of love and forgiveness, resource lists, audio recordings provided by StoryCorps, and a place to submit personal stories of forgiveness.

The Fetzer Institute, with its mission "to foster awareness of the power of love and forgiveness in the emerging global community" is convinced "efforts to address the world's critical issues must go beyond political, social, and economic strategies to their psychological and spiritual roots."

Moore talks tonight in West Hartford, CT

Today, on the Hartford Courant site, Carole Goldberg offers a notice for Thomas Moore’s book signing of A Life at Work, to begin at 7:00 tonight at St. James’s Episcopal Church, 19 Walden St. in West Hartford.

According to Goldberg,
"Moore says a job 'is always connected to a deep and invisible process of finding meaning in life through work.' His book uses mythology and fairy tales, the teaching of Socrates and writings by the poet Yeats to tell readers that even obstacles and failures can be useful for the knowledge they can provide about what a person's true calling is."
Moore’s talk will be in the church’s parish hall. For information, please call 860 521-9620.

See an earlier Barque post about this engagement.

Moore blogs during tour for A Life at Work

On the road in the San Francisco area, Thomas Moore blogs about recent book tour appearances for A Life at Work, at the Barque forum. He mentions James Hillman’s idea of longing as it applies to "the ultimate job or project." Moore adds, "We need that fantasy of a job out of reach. It keeps the soul alive. The frustrating thing is that it is never fully satisfied." In this post, he also talks about his next writing project.

During the evening of Saturday, March 8, Moore spoke at One Taste, San Francisco’s urban retreat centre. In 2004, Silke Tudor wrote about a day at the centre for San Francisco Weekly:
"One Taste is a mindful-living clubhouse and transcendental marketplace for all your California-conscious needs. Yoga, raw foods, meditation, massage, gem-stone therapy, motivational speakers, relationship workshops, orgasmic rebalancing, bioelectography, community dancing, and the occasional circus performer, butoh dancer, and/or urban beat-box poet: All these are features on the One Taste calendar. A fully functional cafe, bookstore, and art gallery and an adjoining set of massage studios are on the way."
Moore has added a comment about his reading at One Taste to his Barque forum blog post.
