Thomas Moore to speak at McGill University

The Whole Person Care program at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec is hosting a seminar with Thomas Moore on Tuesday, 11 April 2006 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Moore will speak about The Spirit and the Soul of Medicine.
"The McGill programs are based on the premise that in situations in which treatment is unable to change the disease outcome, it may be possible to create a space in which healing can occur. Lessons about quality of life and individuation, learned in the arena of advanced illness, also have relevance earlier in the disease trajectory and for those who are physically well. While the existential/ spiritual domain is known to be an important determinant of quality of life, there has been little emphasis on integration of the issues in health care. The Program therefore seeks to integrate the physical aspects of personhood along with the psychosocial and existential/ spiritual ones, and to better understand how to respond to suffering experienced by the whole person."
For further information or reservations, telephone: 514-398-2298 or scroll to the bottom of the Seminars page to fill out an enquiry form for Eileen Lavery. Thomas Moore's session will be in the seminar room of the Gerald Bronfman Centre for Clinical Research in Oncology, 546 Pine Avenue West.

Leading a spiritual life in a secular world

Seeking the Sacred: Leading a Spiritual Life in a Secular World will be available in April, 2006. Contributors to the book participated in a speaking series held in Toronto (2004 - 2005), led by Mary Joseph, a lawyer and United Church minister. Joseph wanted to explore new forms of expression at sacred gatherings:
"A new group that shuns the trappings of traditional, organized religion yet brings people together in an atmosphere of personal spiritual discovery has officially launched in Toronto with its first speakers series. Seekers' Dialogue offers a unique spiritual experience designed to elicit a closer relationship with God, outside of the more formal religious settings currently offered. It is a thoughtful, new approach that provides an alternative to traditional Christian worship services."
Toronto's historic Metropolitan United Church was the venue for the series.

Thomas Moore, author of Dark Nights of the Soul, was the initial speaker for the series and spoke about "The Quest." Roméo Dallaire is the author of Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda. It won the 2004 Governor General's Award for nonfiction. Stephen Lewis is the Canadian Secretary-General's Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa and wrote Race Against Time, the basis for this year's Massey Lecture. Lewis served as the Canadian ambassador to the United Nations from 1984 to 1988. Marion Woodman is the author of Coming Home to Myself, Conscious Femininity, Dancing in the Flames, and The Ravaged Bridegroom. Martin Rutte wrote Chicken Soup for the Soul at Work.

The book's Preface is by Mary Joseph and Tom Harpur has contributed the Foreword.
